What makes these hernias different

A parastomal hernia develops around an ostomy. Symptoms may include bulging, appliance leakage, skin problems, pain, difficulty fitting clothing, or bowel obstruction symptoms.

Repair decisions are individualized because the stoma, bowel anatomy, prior operations, appliance fit, and recurrence risk all matter. Some patients benefit from non-surgical stoma support, while others may be candidates for repair or relocation planning.

Daily pouching, output, leakage, and skin health are central to planning.

Imaging review

CT imaging may help clarify bowel anatomy, defect size, and other abdominal wall defects.

Coordinated care

Planning may involve stoma nursing, colorectal care, wound care, or other surgical teams.
