Understanding diastasis

Diastasis recti is a widening between the rectus muscles of the abdominal wall. It is not the same as a hernia, but the two can overlap, and patients may experience bulging, weakness, discomfort, or difficulty with core activation.

Assessment focuses on anatomy, symptoms, patient goals, and whether a true hernia is also present. Some patients benefit from physiotherapy and strength work, while others may require a surgical discussion.
